QuickBooks Online (QBO) is one of the most widely used small-business accounting platforms, and a common choice across Jamaica. Our Primax bookkeeping team uses it daily with clients of all sizes.

This review is written from that working perspective. We cover what QBO does well for Jamaican users, where it stumbles, and how it stacks up against the main alternatives.

In short. For Jamaican SMEs that bill in JMD and USD and want their accountant to be able to log in easily, QBO is a safe default. Most growing SMEs start on Essentials.

What QuickBooks Online is good at

  • Bank feeds. It can pull transactions in from your bank automatically. Check that your bank is supported before you sign up.
  • Multi-currency handling. Set base currency to JMD (or USD if that is how you operate). QBO revalues your USD balances against JMD so your financials reflect actual exposure.
  • GCT reporting. Set up a 15% “GCT” sales tax. Invoices show GCT-inclusive or exclusive amounts correctly, the GCT Liability Report shows what to remit, and the Audit Log helps you answer TAJ queries.
  • Mobile app. Snap a receipt and the app reads the vendor and amount, so the expense reaches your books quickly.
  • Accountant access. A read/write seat for your chartered accountant. We can pull reports, fix categorisation issues, and prepare returns without you exporting anything.

Where it stumbles

  • GCT registration and filing isn’t automatic. You still file manually through the TAJ portal. QBO produces the numbers; you transcribe them.
  • Payroll for Jamaica is unsupported. QBO has US payroll built in, but for Jamaican PAYE, NIS, NHT and Education Tax you need a separate tool or a manual journal each month. We can set up a payroll routine that works alongside it.
  • Customer support quality is uneven. On complex Jamaica-specific questions you will get further with your accountant than with Intuit support.

Plans

Plan Best for
Simple Start Very small businesses

Advanced Larger operations

How it compares

vs Xero. A close alternative with a clean interface. QBO is widely used by accountants in Jamaica, so support is easy to find, which tips it for most Jamaican SMEs.

vs FreshBooks. Built for freelancers and service businesses. A good fit for a one-person consultancy; growing businesses usually need more.

vs Wave. Wave can suit a very small business starting out. Most growing Jamaican SMEs are better served by QuickBooks Online.

vs Zoho Books. A strong product that works well with the rest of the Zoho suite. If you already use Zoho, it is worth a serious look.

Setup checklist for a Jamaican SME

  1. Choose the plan that fits; most SMEs start on Essentials.
  2. Set base currency to JMD; add USD as a secondary.
  3. Create a GCT 15% tax. Add tourism (10%) and telephone (25%) if you supply those services.
  4. Connect bank feeds for every business account your bank supports.
  5. Set up your chart of accounts to mirror Jamaican reporting norms (cost of sales, GCT payable, statutory payables as separate lines).
  6. Invite your accountant.
  7. Spend a couple of hours on QBO’s training videos before you start.

Verdict

QuickBooks Online is a safe default for growing Jamaican SMEs. It handles multi-currency and GCT reporting, and it is widely used by accountants in Jamaica, so support is easy to find.
